INTRODUCING SMITH ICON
SAME SPORT, DIFFERENT DISCIPLINE
SMITH and Koroyd have been developing high-end helmets together for the best part of a decade. After an array successful integrations in a multitude of bike and snow sports helmets, 2020 presented a new opportunity for SMITH to launch their first FIS-approved race helmet.
The Icon is built around Koroyd, providing direct and angled impact protection and advanced energy absorption for the fastest skiers on the planet.
HIGH SPEED = HIGH PROTECTION
With high speed comes high risk and the need for a helmet optimised for dealing with the impact force the world’s fastest may encounter when pushing the limits of their ability on snow and ice.
As Koroyd has many adaptable elements and characteristics, our engineers are able to develop a specific Koroyd solution which works best (in terms of energy absorption) for the application in question.
In the case of the SMITH Icon, primarily due to the volumes of force downhill racers could endure in the event of an accident, we integrated a low-density core which is stiffer and stronger than standard ski helmet protection materials.
In fact, the Koroyd specification we’re using inside the Icon is similar to motorcycle helmet integrations where the potential velocity of a fall to the ground is greater than say, a fall when cycling or off-piste skiing.

HOW KOROYD WORKS AT IMPACT
Koroyd’s welded tubes crumple instantly and consistently on impact, absorbing maximum force in a controlled manner, minimising energy transferred to your head.
This unique behaviour helps to protect your skull and brain from direct and angled impacts which may reduce the risk of suffering a life-changing injury.
U.S. SKI TEAM ENDORSED
Land Rover U.S. Ski Team athletes Ryan Cochran-Siegle, Laurenne Ross, Bella Wright and River Radmus debuted the Icon race helmet during giant slalom competitions at the World Cup in Sölden, Austria on October 18, 2020.
These pros will use the helmet throughout the winter season. Follow them on Instagram to see the it (and them) in action.
The Icon is also available for children and conforms to FIS RH 2013 requirements. It is available at select retailers and via SMITH directly.
